People may find it odd that a man who only really bets on golf gets interested in National Hunt Racing but it’s basically what got me started in betting in the first place. Growing up I spent my holidays from fourteen onwards working the car parks at Devon & Exeter and Newton Abbot which got me hooked and at University spent many an afternoon at Nottingham races. I must admit I hated the flat, I preferred my money being wasted over a few minutes rather than seconds and maybe that’s what I like about golf betting - the agony of drawing things out and instead of the last fence it’s the 72nd hole on a Sunday! The highlight of my year growing up was never the FA Cup but the Grand National although the love of the Cheltenham Festival came a bit later in life. In 1990 in my first job after University some of the guys I worked with had connections with Nortons Coin and I can still remember their faces listening to the radio as it came in at 100/1. I guess that’s why I love National Hunt racing - underdogs can win and it’s not always about huge money.

Anyway - I digress! I always have a few bets each year at Cheltenham and usually focus on horses that have done well at the Festival before and it has always held me in good stead. One thing I will say is I am glad I don’t bet horses for a living as trying to get bets on has been something of a joke with max bets of £1 ew being offered - it’s the biggest race meeting of the year for gods sake! On the back of this Boyles will be ditched from the site - I cannot promote a “bookmaker” that has no backbone whatsoever.

Just the four tips for next week from me which I put up on Twitter over the last couple of days

Tuesday Supreme Novices Hurdle Cheltenian 1 pt ew 33/1
The record of Champion Bumper winners in the Supreme Novices is not great but Cheltenian actually won that race two years ago and was out until last month. He ran really well to finish 2nd in his first novice hurdle and although the stats are against him I don’t think he would be running if they didn’t think he had a chance.

Thursday Byrne Group Plate Divers 2 pts ew 20/1
Well backed at the last two Festivals he won the Novices Handicap Chase in 2011 @ 10/1 despite finding trouble in running and last year was 4th in this race, probably losing his chance when he hit the wing of the third last. He ran an eyecatching race over hurdles last time out and back over fences I can see him being well backed again.

Friday Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle Coneygree 2 pts ew 16/1 (Spreadex)
Whilst Coneygree hasn’t run at the Festival before but has run his last three races at the track. He won the first two impressively especially the second one over the three mile trip he has to run next week but then was beaten stepping back down in trip. He will be staying on up the hill when others will be crying enough so is well worth an each way punt.

Friday Grand Annual Chase Aldwerwood 2 pts win 7/1
One appearance at the Festival last season in the Vincent O’Brien County Handicap Hurdle and one win to boot despite getting hampered on the home turn. He has taken quite well to chasing and runs off a chase mark just one pound higher than he won on his hurdles rating last year. Can easily see him getting shorter and shorter in price.

To be honest I could write a long list of all the bookmaker specials that are available to entice you to part with your cash with any particular bookmakers but to be honest the chances of you getting anything out of them will be remote. The best bet is to make sure your picks are Non Runner No Bet and try and get Best Odds Guaranteed ante post if you can - Bet365 do offer that. This week we updated the Odds Comparison site for SBI so it now fits in with the overall image so give it a whirl next week at Cheltenham.
