People may find it odd that a man who only really bets on golf gets interested in National Hunt Racing but it’s basically what got me started in betting in the first place. Growing up I spent my holidays from fourteen onwards working the car parks at Devon & Exeter and Newton Abbot which got me hooked and at University spent many an afternoon at Nottingham races. I must admit I hated the flat, I preferred my money being wasted over a few minutes rather than seconds and maybe that’s what I like about golf betting - the agony of drawing things out and instead of the last fence it’s the 72nd hole on a Sunday! The highlight of my year growing up was never the FA Cup but the Grand National although the love of the Cheltenham Festival came a bit later in life. In 1990 in my first job after University some of the guys I worked with had connections with Nortons Coin and I can still remember their faces listening to the radio as it came in at 100/1. I guess that’s why I love National Hunt racing - underdogs can win and it’s not always about huge money.

Anyway - I digress! I always have a few bets each year at Cheltenham and usually focus on horses that have done well at the Festival before or fit well developed trends and it has always held me in good stead. One thing I will say is I am glad I don’t bet horses for a living as trying to get bets on has been something of a joke with max bets of £1 ew being offered - it’s the biggest race meeting of the year for gods sake!

Tuesday

Festival Chase
Time for Rupert 0.5 ew 33/1
Has struggled with terrible injuries the past few years but is still only ten. A veteran of three Festivals including a 2nd to Big Bucks in the World Hurdle , 5th in the RSA Chase when 7/4 fave (broke a blood vessel) and 5th to Synchronised in the Gold Cup. He still shows signs of ability and this once 161 rated horse gets in off 138. The yard have been suffering badly with virus problems yet he still ran OK last time out. I have taken the chance @ 33/1 that this is the race he will run in.

Wednesday

RSA Chase
Many Clouds 1.0 ew 16/1 NRNB
A horse that fits all the trends for the RSA Chase and one that was always going to make a better chaser than hurdler. My one concern is that it has only run in small fields over fences but coped OK with bigger fields over the smaller obstacles.

Coral Cup
Vendor 0.5 ew 14/1 NRNB
Two years ago Vendor was all the rage for the Fred Winter going off a very short 3/1 favourite finishing a respectable 3rd. The way he finishes his races suggests to me that the 2m 5f trip will be more suitable and with this his only entry it is clear this is the one he is being aimed at.

Cross Country Chase
Pearlysteps 0.5 ew 14/1 NRNB
Seems to have taken well to Hunter Chasing winning both his starts with ease - only concern is maybe better going right handed

Friday

Triumph Hurdle
Pearl Castle 0.5 ew 16/1 NRNB
This 86 rated flat horse has taken well to hurdling winning his last two starts in a good fashion. Trainer John Quinn will be aiming for his second win in three years after Countrywide Flame won in 2012
